“In the San Francisco Bay Area, there is currently a shortage of strong players for the region's many wind bands. These groups are usually ‘pay to play’ so we lose some of the pros, but the varied music and interesting percussion parts definitely make it worthwhile.

In the last couple of years, the Ohlone Wind Orchestra has played many challenging works, including complete transcriptions of Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps (Rite of Spring) and Holst's The Planets (Timp-Cam). The shortage of players does make it interesting when trying to cover all of the parts.

One recent example was Ballet For Band which requires six strong players (five if a Harp is available.) We had four. Needless to say, we were all kept hopping. This was my setup (above picture) and first page of the combined Percussion 1 and 3 parts. (below picture)

A colleague once described us as: ‘busier than one-armed wallpaper hangers.’ I agree.”
