Joe Mowatt - Vanities

Joe’s setup for the musical Vanities at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California.

“The drum/percussion book for Vanities was orchestrated by my wife Lynne Shankel for the production at Pasadena Playhouse. Michael Croiter (Avenue Q, Yellow Sound Lab Studio, Sesame Street, Chita Rivera) played the run in Pasadena. I took over the show when it moved into Second Stage Theatre in New York City in the summer of 2009. Half of the band (Key 1, Reed 1, Reed 2 and Trumpet) was house left in the theater and the rest of us (Key 2, Guitar, Bass, Percussion) were in a dressing room above the stage. This made for some creative cramming of all that gear into a small space! Stylistically the show spans 30 years; from the early 1960’s through the 1980’s. The book is challenging in the sense that the player is required to play different instruments with the hands while keeping time with the feet. For example, I had to play shaker and congas, or shaker and bells, or xylophone and/or bells while playing time with my feet. The use of a foot operated tambourine added an additional texture on some of the backbeats. Some of the vibraphone parts utilized the motor to achieve different textures and were very exposed. It was a challenging book to play and I had a great time playing with a great band!”
